Possibly shutting down schools in January??
Submitted by mikelriley on Mon, 11/03/2008 - 12:36.
I was told last week by students something that concerns me. They heard on the news that if some schools (Samuell, Spruce, et. al.) do not have high enough AYP's by January, the TEA will shut the schools down then. Someone please tell me this just another rumor.

Still unanswered questions......
I believe the facts. Unfortunately not all the facts have been presented. Myself, I am in agreement with not trusting our current super. He has proven himself untrustworthy just in his self contradictory statements he has made on several issues, and it seems several of the board members don't fall far from the tree. What I am still concerned about is his statement that the district's financial woes will at least mostly taken care of in January. How?
Why should students or adults be scared?
I think the point to be made is trust. How much do students and adult parents TRUST Hinajosa, I can only hope along the same way I feel, they don't! We have been told we had the Yellow Brick Road, so I think the name of the game is now, who do you trust?
Now we have the "gamesaver" financial man who will turn DISD's money woes around, I do not trust this route either!
Hope everyone had a great holiday!
Schools closing (Spruce)
It seems that the Principal called the Superintendent down to speak to the student body because the job was more for her to handle than she was expecting a few weeks back and he threatened the student with closing the school down if they didn't get their act together.
Hinojosa
Wonder if the kids are as scared of him as the grown ups?
Which news source?
Which news source did they say they heard it from? KFAA, Fox, who? Thanks.
Where did you hear it from, exactly?
I know that sometimes rumors flow freely through the system, yet many times there is a grain of truth. For instance the DMN's report on the last trustees Saturday board meeting mentioned something about school closings, which I couldn't get anymore info on. Next we see from Hinojosa's office a report to the DMN that somehow there is a plan in place to solve all these woes by January. Who knows? Cutting losses, which may mean getting rid of some schools who stand in the district's way of there goal to be "premier?" Or an attempt to keep TEA off their backs and beat them to the punch so the district isn't split, and they can keep their niceties and dignity?
Board would have to vote
I think the Board would likely have to take action to shut down a school--unless the District is in receivership.
Board Vote
And the good news on that, Allen, is that they will simply be too busy extending their terms and writing profitable contracts for personal gain to meddle with school business! If they cannot fire the one employee whom they hired, I don't think they will have the cojones to close schools mid-year...especially now that they have bilingual principals leading them.
DISD in Disarray/Crowded Classrooms and Classes Shut Down
I have heard that many high school students have had to drop classes at Samuell because they did not have a teacher. Even though, they need the classes to graduate. Over 80 students had to drop Spanish because they did not have a teacher after the RIF.
There are about 60 teaching positions still posted. 15 of which are in the southeast learning community. They have many other positions that are not filled that are not posted. Last week, Lincoln had 10 positions posted, they have not even started interviewing for the positions, but they have taken them off the vacancy list. They probably did that so they do not look so bad.
Samuell has over ten positions vacant, also. They did not post them. They have over ten subs that report there everyday for the vacancies. Spence Middle School has the same problem. Numerous subs everyday for the vacancies, I am sure this is happening all across the district.
Our poor students are caught in the middle. TEA needs to take over QUICK!!!!

When things go badly check the head.... Mrs. Newsome runs these schools and she is a horrible lady
Mrs. Newsome
Actually, murdered, she only oversees the elementary schools. I believe Lincoln is in Leslie Williams area and Spence is under Emilio Castro. I am NOT defending her or anyone else at the Central level, just want blame to lie where it belongs.
